Quick answer: transplant cauliflower seedlings when they are young, actively growing, have several true leaves, and have been gradually hardened to outdoor conditions. University of Minnesota Extension recommends beginning hardening when cauliflower has about four or five true leaves, then gradually increasing exposure to sunlight and wind. Harden seedlings before planting out

Illinois Extension defines hardening off as gradually introducing indoor-grown seedlings to outdoor sun, wind, and temperature changes rather than moving them abruptly. Illinois Extension: Hardening Off Indoor Seedlings.

Transplant readiness depends on plant development and outdoor conditions, not a single calendar date.

Use young, vigorous transplants

Illinois Extension advises using young, active cauliflower transplants and notes that heat, cold, drought, or plant damage can interrupt development. It recommends spacing roughly 18–24 inches apart in the row for garden plantings. Illinois Extension: Cauliflower.

Reduce transplant shock

Prepare the planting site before removing seedlings from their cells, handle the root ball gently, plant at the appropriate depth, water after transplanting, and watch moisture closely while roots re-establish. Avoid making multiple drastic corrections at once if a seedling droops.
