Editorial Standards

Purpose of the catalogue

The EOMMI Public Domain Literature Library provides free access to a curated selection of public-domain works, primarily essays, speeches, and reflective prose. The catalogue aims to facilitate discovery by grouping works thematically and offering contextual notes that support reading without replacing personal interpretation.

Scope and selection

The library currently includes 96 works in English, all sourced from Project Gutenberg. Selection is based on thematic coherence, literary or historical interest, and availability of reliable digital editions. The catalogue does not attempt to represent all periods or genres equally.

Source attribution

Every work in the catalogue is a digital edition originally produced by Project Gutenberg. The library provides links to these editions and does not host original transcriptions. Bibliographic records include publisher information and, where applicable, editor and contributor details.

Bibliographic records

Each record includes title, author(s), publication source, keywords, target reader description, and a catalogue note. Keywords and target reader fields are drawn from Project Gutenberg metadata and are not independently verified. Catalogue notes are original editorial summaries based on the text and its context.

Category assignment

Works are assigned to one of four categories: Adventure Picaresque Fiction, Fantasy Juvenile Worlds, Science Fiction Utopias, and Historical Psychological Social Fiction. Categories are thematic guides, not definitive classifications. A work may resonate with multiple categories; the assignment reflects a primary emphasis.

Editorial reading context

Catalogue notes and recommendations are informed by reading of the works, but no claim is made that every book has been read in full. Notes aim to highlight key themes, stylistic features, and connections between works.

Edition facts and text measurements

Publication information such as dates and editions is taken from Project Gutenberg metadata. The catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time where the source text can be measured reliably. Users should consult the source files for complete textual details.

Recommendations and related works

Each category guide recommends three books with reasons based on the content and context of the work. Recommendations are suggestions for entry points, not endorsements of quality or importance. Related works are mentioned only when supported by the catalogue note or common themes.

Bibliographic dates and catalogue measurements

The catalogue distinguishes the Project Gutenberg digital release from a work’s original or first publication. Project Gutenberg is identified as the digital source for the edition available here; its release year is therefore shown as Gutenberg Release Year, not as the work’s original publication year.

When an explicit first-publication or issue date can be supported directly by the title or issue information, it may be shown separately as First Publication Year. When that date cannot be confirmed, the catalogue displays Not confirmed rather than guessing a year.

Where the source text can be measured reliably, the catalogue may provide word count and estimated reading time. These measurements describe reading scope and are not quality rankings.
